Fabrizio Romano: Newcastle closing in on Dougie Freedman

Some big claims have emerged this afternoon from Fabrizio Romano, who reports that Newcastle United are closing in on the appointment of Dougie Freedman.

It’s believed the Crystal Palace chief is now the ‘frontrunner’ to replace Dan Ashworth as our new Director of Football, with Newcastle ‘advancing in talks’ over a move for the 49-year-old.

Romano reveals that negotiations are ‘ongoing’, with Freedman now facing a final decision on his future. He comes highly-rated following his time at Selhurst Park and has clearly impressed during the interview phase, which has been whittled down to the final three over the past few week.

Freedman has recruited superbly at Palace, bringing the likes of Marc Guehi, Ebere Eze, Michael Olise and Adam Wharton to South London, showing his keen eye for EFL talent capable of making the step up.

With a new director of football needed for a pivotal summer of ins and outs on Tyneside, it sounds like we’re closing in our man to replace Ashworth just in time for the transfer window.
