What Are Newcastle's Chances of Winning A Trophy This Season?
Its well know that The Toon have been having a trophy drought for quite some time now. Newcastle United Football Club's last major domestic trophy was the FA Cup in 1954–55 which is a stat that does not flatter The Magpies, and for fans of our beloved football club, one we hope disappears sooner rather than later. We had a chance to end the hoodoo of course a couple of years ago, but we fell at the final hurdle to Manchester United at Wembley.
Now this season we have started brightly and although winning the league is probably out of the question, with bookmakers having us at 25/1 to lift the title it may well be worth a punt at those odds and also seeing what NoDepositFan has on offer too. It is maybe worth Newcastle focusing on other competitions for a more realistic chance of Winning a trophy and the NUFC blog is going to explore this and see how likely it is we can win something this season. It will have to be a domestic trophy though as unfortunately, we have no European football this year (This won't be the case next season though I am sure).
Premier League
Now, we already spoke about our chances of winning this particular trophy previously, but now we are going to look into it in more detail and see why this feat may prove so difficult. First and foremost the main reason is Manchester City, they are still an unstoppable force and you need a near-perfect season to get the better of Pep Guardiola's men. Newcastle United currently don't have the squad to compete consistently at their level, and if we are honest there are a few other teams ahead of us in the pecking order too. A miracle could occur and we could do a Leicester, but we would be heavily relying on other teams having an off-season to life this trophy at the end of the season.
Chance of winning - 2.9/10
F.A Cup
Now the F.A cup for me is still a wonderful competition and the trophy I would like to lift the most. We won't find out who our opponent will be in the third round for quite some time, so it's hard to get a feel for the competition right now. We could do this though, so if we get a good draw in round 3 then we may go all the way. Teams do take this a little more seriously than the league cup so that increases the difficulty a bit, but this one is possible. Wouldn't it be fitting to end the drought with the last trophy we won all the way back in 1955.
Chance of winning - 7.2/10
League Cup
This is the last trophy we let slip through our grasp, but I am most confident about winning this one. We have a favourable tie away at AFC Wimbledon (I love what that club is all about, but we should be beating them) and we also the squad have the experience of getting to the final of this competition already so I see no reason that they can't go one better. If we take it seriously and don't rest too many players I think we could win this.
Chance of Winning - 8.9/10
Now don't forget these are just my own opinions so don't shoot the messenger, but of course, feel free to let us know in the comments what you think we can or can't win next season. Howay the lads!
