One 9/10, three 8s and one 5 - Newcastle player ratings from Man Utd win

One 9/10, three 8s and one 5 - Newcastle player ratings from Man Utd win

A huge win for Newcastle United and a sensational display, as we outplayed Man Utd with 11 and 10 men as Will Osula stepped up in the 90th minute to secure all three points!

Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each player involved in last night's classic...

Starting 11

Ramsdale (8.5) - Preferred to the out of form Pope and he repaid the faith with two magnificent saves from Yoro and Zirkzee. Looks like the position is his to lose now.

Trippier (8.5) - Proved his worth with a captain's performance as he used all of his experience and leadership to guide us to victory. Cunha looked a threat early on, but Trippier bullied him out of the game from that point onwards. Played the ball down the line that led to the winner.

Thiaw (7) - Wasn’t his greatest game but did what was needed to get us over the line. Seemed to step up a gear when we went down to 10 men. His passing was a bit below the standards we’ve come to expect.

Burn (7.5) - Typically committed performance from Big Dan Burn who thundered into challenges and showed his passing range with some great diagonals to open up the pitch.

Hall (7.5) - Blotted his copybook by giving away the foul that led to the equaliser but was otherwise impressive. His ability to win a free kick was on full display here and must be close to locking up the left back position for the World Cup.

Ramsey (5) - Make no mistake about it, the referee has made a massive error by issuing a second yellow card for simulation when he clearly just stumbled but Ramsey can have no complaints about the first yellow card. It was an absolutely needless yellow and he was fortunate his teammates bailed him out.

Tonali (8) - Ran himself into the ground and seemed to succumb to cramp in injury time. His ability to cover the ground in midfield made it look like we had a full complement of players and barely noticed we were a player short.

Joelinton (9*) - Big Joe was at his bulldozing best and he bullied his countryman Casemiro in midfield. Blazed a shot high into the Leazes end but was otherwise faultless. Picked up his obligatory yellow and had to be dragged away by Tonali to avoid a second yellow.

Elanga (6) - Another frustrating performance from Elanga who does some great things but then undoes it all right at the end. Got into a few great crossing positions but his end product was sorely lacking.

Barnes (6) - Sacrificed at half time due to the red card but he can have few complaints as his goal drought continues. Had only 16 touches in an ineffective performance. Needs to improve.

Gordon (7) - Won the penalty and slotted it away emphatically. Is proving to be a reliable penalty taker but we really need to see more from open play. Is making a good fist of playing as a striker but you get the sense he’d love to be back on his left wing.

Substitutes

Willock (7) - Was introduced at half time to self shore up the midfield and did his job perfectly. Very disciplined and energetic performance from a player who has so much potential but just lacks the consistency.

Murphy (NR) - Came on and offered energy up top, but rarely got on the ball.

Osula (NR) - Hard to give a rating from such a short cameo, but wow!! A goal worthy of winning any game and a fantastic moment for a player who has seemingly been heading towards the exit door. Was preferred to Wissa and repaid the faith shown with an absolute worldie to secure the victory.

Botman (NR) - Replaced a tired Tonali in stoppage time.
