NUFC reporter reveals the left-back Rafa will now try to sign after Lukaku deal falls through
After a deal for Jordan Lukaku fell through last night, the Chronicle's Lee Ryder claims Newcastle will now turn their attentions back to Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca.
It was reported on Monday that we had submitted a loan bid to sign Barreca, however it seems we then opted to pursue a deal for Lazio's Lukaku instead.
With a move for the Belgian now being off after a failed medical was confirmed last night, it seems Benitez will now go back in for Barreca.
Here's a snippet from the Chronicle's piece:
'Newcastle United’s deal to sign Jordan Lukaku on loan has been called off.
'United will now turn back to Monaco’s Antonio Barreca as they look to find cover for Paul Dummett.'
It would not surprise me if we've now missed out chance with Barreca, however. Not just because we'd be back for sloppy seconds, but based on the fact he may no longer be available.
It was reported earlier in the week that Thierry Henry had sanctioned his potential loan move, however the ex-Arsenal striker has now been sacked by Monaco - and his reported replacement Leonardo Jardim is the man who actually played Barreca before he was dismissed by Monaco just a few months ago (so he may well want to keep him).
Who knows how things will pan out over the next 6 days. A window that should've been pivotal in keeping Benitez at the club and boosting our survival hopes has quickly become an absolute farce.
