NUFC fans all say the same thing after watching Kevin Mbabu in Wednesday night semi-final..

by Olly Hawkins ·

Newcastle fans were all saying the same thing on social media on Wednesday night - why on earth did we let Kevin Mbabu go?

The 24-year-old, who left for just €120k two years ago, is now a regular in the Swiss national side and started in their UEFA Nations League semi-final against Portugal last night.

He impressed, bombing on well from right-back, showing frightening pace and creating several chances, begging the question just why Benitez let him go - something that seems all the more bizarre when consider how well he could've worked as a right wing-back.

Here's what Newcastle fans had to say on Twitter as they watched the marauding full-back cause havoc against Portugal last night:

You have to wonder just why Rafa let him go - maybe he was homesick or his attitude wasn't right - but you can't help but wonder what could have been, with this appearing to be one of Benitez's few mistakes since he took over on Tyneside.

It would be different if he really didn't show any promise during his few starts at senior level, but to me he looked the part and a player who had the pace, athleticism and tenacity to make it in England. On his league debut he had Pedro in his pocket all game, but we didn't see him a great deal after that.

Not only has Mbabu helped BSC Young Boys to back-to-back Swiss League titles, bagging 3 goal and 13 goals along the way, he's now earned himself a £8m move to Wolfsburg, with him signing a pre-contract in April ahead of his big move to the Bundesliga this summer.
