This is probably the most ridiculous Saudi takeover / Steve Bruce suggestion I've seen yet...
Another one of Steve Bruce’s former players has leaped to his defence today, but Chris Kirland's latest suggestion is one of the most baffling comments we've seen yet - and there's been plenty to pick from!
The former Liverpool goalkeeper, who played under Bruce at Wigan Athletic, has declared that it would be "absurd" to back someone like Mauricio Pochettino with PIF’s bottomless pit of cash should there ever be a Saudi takeover - instead staying Steve Bruce should be the man given big money to spend.
Here is what he told Inside Futbol about our current manager and the prospect of him being replaced in the event of a takeover:
“He (Steve Bruce) just knows a gem when he’s got one and I’d love to see him get money to spend at Newcastle.”
“Whether that’ll happen or not, you know, they don’t spend much money, do they, Newcastle – until they get taken over, but then there’s the talk if they get taken over, will they sack him and get a Pochettino in or get somebody else in, which is absurd for me.
"But nothing should surprise you in football.”
The only thing "absurd" about this is the suggestion any new owner should stick with Steve Bruce over someone like Mauricio Pochettino - a top manager who turned Spurs into title contenders and Champions League finalists!
While Bruce hasn’t been a total failure at NUFC, it’s hard to vouch for him as the man to take us forward in the event of a takeover.
He hasn’t shown anything in his managerial career that would indicate he could turn us into the force the Saudis would want us to become - or at least build towards.
A similar series of events to Mark Hughes' final few months at Man City would likely occur in the event of a takeover. A manager who is on borrowed time from the off and one that is likely only one bad run of form away from the sack.
As a Toon fan who actually thinks Bruce has done alright, but not exceptional, let me ask Chris Kirkland this… What other top flight side would employ Steve Bruce if he were looking for a club today?
