Sky Sports: Two names now on Newcastle United's radar after Unai Emery snub

by Olly Hawkins · 3 November 2021, 14:20

So, Unai Emery won't be arriving at Newcastle United anytime soon after confirming he'll stay at Villarreal this lunchtime.

We've made a mess of this one and must now look elsewhere, which leads us to the latest update from Sky Sports' Keith Downie, who's been reporting from outside St James' Park this afternoon.

According to Sky's North-East correspondent, two names in the frame are Eddie Howe and Roberto Martinez.

Downie claims that Howe would 'take the job in a heartbeat', while Martinez would need to be bought out of his contract at Belgium - having a release clause believed to be in the region of £2m.

It seems Paulo Fonseca is out of the running, with the consortium looking at others since interviewing the former Roma boss, while Lucien Favre is another option that appears to have gone quiet.

With Jones expected to keep his job at the club, it's interesting to hear that Howe 'got on very well' with the Gateshead-born coach during a brief spell together at Bournemouth.

As for Martinez, he knows our current interim manager as well as anyone in football, having worked alongside Jones during spells with Wigan, Everton and Belgium.
