St James' Park expansion calls ramp up after stunning figures emerge on Tuesday morning
Newcastle fans have stepped up calls for an expand St James' Park after a staggering 30,000 people queued for 1,000 extra season tickets on the club's website this morning.
Just last week, the club announced that 1,000 additional season tickets would go on sale on the 28th June, giving supporters another chance to secure a seat ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Those tickets went on sale from 10am this morning and, just an hour and a half later, they had sold out, with the queue reaching a staggering 30,000 people at one point.
With the demand now far greater than the supply, calls for an expansion at St James' Park intensified on social media, as thousands of fans missed out on tickets.
Speaking to The Athletic earlier this year about a possible renovation, co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi had this to say:
"St James’ Park is unique, special, the cathedral of the city, sitting on its hill.
“We will definitely look at expanding it, working with the city and council to see what we can do. There are a lot of things that need to happen first, but that’s the way forward.
“If we can get it to 60 or 65,000 thousand, amazing, and we will look at every possibility.
“But are we going to build a new stadium? No. It would be like tearing your soul out.”
Looking at the tens of thousands of people that were so desperate to get one today, there's no doubt that in the future we could sell out a stadium upwards of 60,000 week in week out.
And if we can do that while keeping the history and integrity of St James' Park alive, then it's surely a no brainer.
With the sheer amount of support that the club has, the sky really is the limit for a fanbase desperate to witness every step of this exciting new era!
