Four injuries confirmed as Howe issues update ahead of pre-season meeting with Mainz 05

by Olly Hawkins ·

Eddie Howe has revealed FOUR players who look set to miss today's friendly with Mainz 05 due to ongoing injury concerns.

He's confirmed that Javier Manquillo is still in Spain having treatment on a groin problem, but should be back with the group next week.

Jamal Lewis is also nursing a calf injury that'll keep him out until our trip to Portugal later this week, where we are due to play Burnley and Benfica.

Federico Fernandez is 'working back slowly' after having some tightness in his calf, while U23 talent Kell Watts has a 'minor' knee injury, meaning he'll also sit out of today's game after failing to feature in our 3-0 win over 1860 Munich over the weekend.

Here's what The Mail's Craig Hope has had to say on all four, followed by Howe's comments on Manquillo and Fernandez:

Howe on Javier Manquillo:

‘He (Javier Manquillo) has (still) got a groin problem that he had at the end of last season. It wasn’t fixed in the summer and so he is away having treatment (over in Spain) but I think he should be back maybe around the Portugal trip, or maybe just after, to train.’

Howe on Federico Fernandez:

"It’s tight but we’re taking it carefully to build him back up before he trains. He is one of the leaders of the group though, a very positive influence around the players so I’m delighted he’s here. We hope to get him back on the training pitch as soon as possible."
