Surprise medical confirmed as Newcastle agree to sell forgotten man - The Telegraph

by Olly Hawkins ·

According to The Telegraph's John Percy, Dwight Gayle is closing in on a move to Stoke City.

The Midlands reporter has revealed that the Newcastle United striker has completed the first part of his medical today and will seal a permanent move to the Championship side 'this week.'

This comes after Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Preston, Reading and Millwall were all linked with a move for the 32-year-old yesterday, however it looks like he'll be signing at the Bet365 Stadium.

Gayle has been left out of Eddie Howe's plans over pre-season and asked to train with the U21s instead, with the NUFC boss admitting in a recent interview that he's been given permission to find a new club.

With 59 goals and 16 assists in 100 appearances in the second tier, this is a smart move from Stoke and a deal that could work well for all parties.

We get a small fee, they get a proven Championship goal-scorer and the player himself finally gets a chance to play regularly again after a few years on the sidelines at St James' Park.
