Mehrdad Ghodoussi reacts to late farce at Liverpool & Eddie Howe speaks out - "Absolute joke"

by Olly Hawkins ·

Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has described the late scenes at Anfield as an "absolute joke" as our unbeaten run was ended by some baffling officiating.

Despite five minutes being added on for stoppage time, Andre Mariner allowed Liverpool to deliver a 98th minute corner - which was eventually converted by Fabio Carvalho after a scramble in the box.

Ghodoussi remains "so proud" of the team for the heroic effort and superb display, believing we "left everything on the pitch" and "deserved a point", but he's clearly furious at officials who allowed the game to run well beyond the allotted time.

As for Eddie Howe, he's described the result as an "absolute sickener" due to the "painful" nature of our late defeat, but has praised the team's performance and Alexander Isak's impressive debut, feeling our new £60m man was a "real threat" throughout and unlucky to be denied a second.

Here's what our co-owner tweeted after the game, followed by Howe's classy post-match interview:
