Youri Tielemans update arrives from SJP as Sky Sports reporter claims two signings still possible

by Olly Hawkins ·

Sky Sports' Keith Downie has issued an update on Newcastle's pursuit of Youri Tielemans, revealing where things stand with nine hours remaining until the summer window slams shut.

He reports that Leicester City would reluctantly sell if a £25m bid arrived for the midfielder, with the Foxes aware that he'll leave for free at the end of the season if he doesn't sign a new deal.

We appear to be very interested, however Downie suggests that his wage demands could be a problem, stating that we'd need to go beyond our current wage structure to bring the Belgian international to St James' Park.

So, it seems we have a decision to make on that front. A £25m fee is a potential bargain for a player of his calibre, yet his salary demands may have to come down if we're to tie up a late deal for the former Anderlecht man.

Elsewhere, Downie confirms that we're in talks with West Ham over 20-year-old right-back Harrison Ashby, saying we are pushing for one or two late signings on what's been a 'frustrating' deadline day so far for the club.

Here's what he told Sky Sports News when speaking live from St James' Park just moments ago:

"Youri Tielemans is a player that Newcastle have been interested in for a while. That interest has stood for much of this transfer window.

"We told you yesterday that a bit of £25 million would land the Belgian international. Newcastle are interested.

"I think the issue for Newcastle is wages. He has just one year left on his contract. If he lets that run until the end of the season, he can pretty much name his price in terms of wages, whichever team comes in for him, so it'd be a big decision for Tielemans to decide to pack up and leave now.

"I think Newcastle would need to break their wage structure if they were to land him, so I think that is the question as far as Newcastle are concerned.

"It's my information that Newcastle are chasing one potentially two deals.

"I've obviously mentioned Harrison Ashby (West Ham) to you already. But as things stand, things are up in the air and I would say 50/50 at present (on incomings).

"Newcastle are still active, but I think at this moment in time they're feeling a little bit frustrated."
