Fabrizio Romano reveals the Premier League winger Newcastle tried to sign on deadline day

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle approached Tottenham over a deadline day move for Lucas Moura, but the North London club refused to let the Brazilian leave.

With his contract set to expire in 2023, there was belief that Spurs would be willing to let go of the ex-PSG man who has made just two Premier League appearances off the bench so far this season. 

Newcastle had been looking to strengthen out wide all summer, with us lacking in quality and depth behind Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron and Ryan Fraser.

Both Newcastle and Aston Villa had shown interest in a move for the 30-year-old who's fallen out of favour under Antonio Conte, but Spurs 'decided to keep the player.' Perhaps this was one of the failed moves Howe referred to earlier today, where he admitted our Premier League rivals showed no interest in helping us out with late loan deals!

At 30-years-old with the role of being an impact sub, it is likely that Lucas will now focus on what is potentially his final season in North London and explore his options as a free agent next summer.
