Two set to be left out of Eddie Howe's 25-man squad to make room for Loris Karius - Report
Following an ankle ligament injury to Karl Darlow, Newcastle United have moved to bring in German stopper Loris Karius on a free transfer.
The 29-year-old looks set to sign on a 'short-term' deal to provide cover for Nick Pope following Martin Dubravka's late move to Manchester United, however The Athletic have revealed that TWO players must now be cut from Eddie Howe's squad to make room for the former Liverpool goalkeeper.
As things stand, Howe has 26 senior players on his books as he prepares to name his 25-man squad for the first half of the 2022/23 season.
Emil Krafth will be left out after suffering a devastating ACL injury, but one more must also miss out to make room for Karius' seemingly imminent arrival - and it looks like it's between Karl Darlow and Jonjo Shelvey.
Both are expected to be missing until after the World Cup break, which will see the season pause in mid November and resume in the final week of December.
Now we appear to have Darlow's short-term replacement in Karius, I'd expect him to be left out of our 25-man squad, meaning it could look something like this:
- Pope
- Karius
- Gillespie
- Targett
- Manquillo
- Dummett
- Lewis
- Trippier
- Botman
- Burn
- Lascelles
- Schar
- Joelinton
- Guimaraes
- Willock
- S. Longstaff
- Shelvey
- Ritchie
- Murphy
- Almiron
- Saint-Maximin
- Fraser
- Wilson
- Wood
- Isak
