Eddie Howe makes mockery of pre-Newcastle claims as myth is debunked in just 12 months
When our alleged move for Unai Emery fell through and Eddie Howe emerged as the top target in line to take over on Tyneside, I remember what so many of the pundits were saying.
"Eddie Howe teams can't defend." - "Look how many goals his Bournemouth side conceded!"
It may be true that the Cherries had a less than impressive defensive record during periods of their five-season stint in the Premier League, but those who wrote off his chances of whipping this Newcastle side into shape will be eating their words just 12 months later.
Not only did Howe take a winless Toon from relegation fodder to top 10 hopefuls last season, we have started this season superbly from a defensive point of view.
In fact, with just nine conceded so far this season, no Premier League side has let in less goals than goals that Eddie's Mags so far, proving we are not only developing a brand of football at the top end of the pitch but also becoming a real tough nut to crack.
Some called Howe's approach 'naive' at Bournemouth, as they were sometimes blown away after going toe-to-toe with top sides, but it's clear he's worked on finding that balance, evolving as a manager during his period out of the game.
It's well documented that he spent time observing Diego Simeone's methods at Atletico Madrid, and it seems they've had a positive impact. He's clearly meticulous and an extremely hard worker who leaves no stone unturned, but also a manager who's always learning and developing his own skillset.
The arrival of Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Sven Botamn, Dan Burn and Matt Targett have helped, but our fitness level, spirit and much-improved shape play a huge role in defending well as a team, not to mention Howe has brought the best out of existing players like Fabian Schar; a player who looked destined for the exit door under Steve Bruce.
The best defence in the Premier League so far this season, a clean sheet at Old Trafford last weekend and 10 goals conceded in our last 14 home games speaks volumes. Eddie Howe teams CAN defend.
