Alan Shearer reveals what impressed him most about NUFC and assesses VAR controversy at Spurs
Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Alan Shearer heaped praise on Newcastle's 'relentless pressing, work rate and togetherness' after beating Tottenham 2-1, feeling we look 'so fit.'
Thanks to goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron, we now find ourselves sitting in the Champions League spots after just one defeat in 12 games so far this season.
Like many other Toon fans, the club legend has often been left speechless by some of Newcastle's performances in 2022, but an away win against one of the 'big six' was certainly a huge statement to the rest of the league.
One main topic of praise from the Premier League's leading goalscorer is the team's unity and understanding of Eddie Howe's high pressing system, with players like Almiron - who has had a huge resurgence this year - epitomising the intensity and high work rate that Howe is demanding from his players.
Here's what Shearer had to say, praising our team spirit, relentless pressing and fitness levels, also giving his take on the Wilson goal; which he insists was 'never a foul.'
Alan Shearer on the performance:
"They looked so fit. They’re relentless in their pressing, work rate, togetherness.
"They have a tremendous team spirit. They’re all on the same page.
"They all know what they’re doing. Every single one of them knows their job."
"It's great to see. I am so happy with the performance!"
Alan Shearer on Callum Wilson's opening goal:
Heading into a third transfer window under the new ownership, if Newcastle can keep up this kind of form then there is no telling where we could end up come the end of the season.
