After a couple of failed bids and a £50m valuation we refused to meet, Newcastle's summer-long pursuit of Moussa Diaby ended with him remaining at Bayer Leverkusen.

The Bundesliga side have endured a tough start to the season, sitting one point above the drop zone in Germany and bottom of their Champions League group, however the Frenchman did impress in last night's decisive clash with Atletico Madrid.

After scoring when the two side's met last month, Diaby opened the scoring at the Metropolitano, silencing the crowd in a game the La Liga giants had to win to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stages.

In the end, Atletico missed a 98th minute penalty to win it at the death, being dumped out in dramatic fashion as the match ended 2-2 on the night

With Leverkusen in a relegation battle and exiting European football at the first hurdle, it'll be interesting to see if we reignite our interest in Diaby; who's managed four goals and four assists so far this season despite his side's struggles.
