Video: Dramatic scenes at St James' Park as Newcastle vs Sunderland ends in controversy for U21s

Newcastle United's U21s suffered a nightmare end to last night's clash with Sunderland's second string at St James' Park, as a 94th minute handball earned the Mackems a late point.

Joe White opened the scoring in the Tyne and Wear derby clash, scoring from a well worked corner that resembled the routine we saw from Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier in the build up to Callum Wilson's second against Aston Villa on Saturday.

We were closing in on a 1-0 win that would've taken us up to fourth in the Premier League 2, although our hopes of protecting that lead were dented when ex-Sunderland talent Jay Turner-Cooke saw red against his former club with 15 minutes remaining.

Just as we looked set to see out the victory in front of 2,500 inside St James' Park, Sunderland equalised in the 94th minute, with goalkeeper Alex Bass converting from a corner at the second attempt.

After the game, Bass admitted that the rebound went in off his hand, leaving him reluctant to celebrate as he looked overly gingerly towards officials.

A tough one to take for our young Mags and harsh lesson to learn, although it was good to see Joe White impress - he scored a stunner last week and often trains with the first team - while Alex Murphy also looked quick, strong and capable on the ball at centre-back following his summer move from Ireland.
