England suffer late injury - Another Newcastle player now in contention for World Cup call?

by Olly Hawkins ·

Gareth Southgate was sent yet another injury headache last night, with Ben Chilwell pulling up with a hamstring problem that looks almost certain to keep him out of the World Cup.

The left-back had to be helped off the field just seconds before the full-time whistle in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb, leaving him close to tears just 17 days before the tournament kicks off in Qatar.

Graham Potter has since revealed that the injury "doesn't look positive", meaning Southgate could be forced to consider his options at left-back; and one of those is Dan Burn.

It's believed the Geordie giant has been named in England's 55-man long list - which will be cut to 26 next Wednesday - and this development can only increase his slim hopes of a late call-up.

As highlighted on Sky Sports this morning, Luke Shaw will be selected and the likes of Tyrick Mitchell (Crystal Palace) and Ryan Sessegnon (Spurs) remain other options, while Kieran Trippier may be needed down the other flank if the injured Reece James and Kyle Walker fail to recover in time.

It remains a long shot for Burn, but his versatility, superb form, leadership and experience could be valuable to a Three Lions side who've been dropping like flies in recent weeks.

Let's hope the big man from Blyth can make it alongside Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope!
