Fabrizio Romano: Newcastle tracking Premier League midfielder and winger still wanted

by Andrew Reynolds ·

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle are ‘following’ Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo and are ‘still exploring the market’ for a new winger in January.

Since joining the Seagulls in 2021, the Ecuadorean has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the most impressive and in-demand defensive midfielders in the Premier League.

Dan Ashworth played a key role in his move to the South Coast almost two years ago and Eddie Howe would surely love the 21-year-old given our lack of depth in that area, but with his current contract lasting until 2025 and a host of 'top clubs; in the mix, it would take a huge sum to land him.

Romano adds that we're yet to enter negotiations with the Seagulls, so it seems there's plenty of work to be done on that deal.

We were also heavily linked to a host of wingers over the summer, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby one of our main targets. It was recently suggested that we'd cooled our interest in that department following Miguel Almiron’s incredible form, but Romano insists we are still looking to improve that area of the field.

Hopefully we can still bring in a few new faces in the coming window - even if we are struggling for funds - to offer both quality in depth and some fresh talent into the squad

On Newcastle’s transfer plans, Romano told CaughtOffside: "Newcastle wanted a winger in the summer, so they are still exploring the market for that position ahead of January. I expect that to be one of their priorities.

“On midfielders, they are following Moises Caicedo for sure but at the moment there are no negotiations at all with Newcastle. Many top clubs are following him closely."
