Howe reveals "nasty injury", reacts to Leeds draw, time-wasting and an incredible 2022

by Olly Hawkins ·

Following today's 0-0 draw with Leeds, Eddie Howe has revealed that Matt Targett is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to an ongoing heel issue.

The "nasty" injury has been hampering the left-back for the "past couple of months", however he will now be missing for a "period of time" after Jamal Lewis was named on the bench ahead of the former Aston Villa man today.

Howe also described the stalemate at St James' Park as "one of those days", feeling we create enough chances to win the game comfortably.

He's refusing to let negativity creep in, believing we did everything but score against the time-wasting White, feeling it's a sign of the times that a former mid-table rival are playing for a point!

Here's what Howe had to say on all of the above, also offering his thoughts on a "great year" for Newcastle United.

Howe on the 0-0 draw with Leeds:

"It was one of those days for us.

"We had enough chances to win the game comfortably. It just wouldn't go in for us today. You have take one of those chances.

“All that was missing was the finish today. No need for any negativity internally from me to the players. We’ve created the chances. Sometimes football works that way.

"It is a sign of how far we have come that they were time-wasting – and doing everything they could to take time out of the game."

Howe on Matt Targett's absence today:

"It’s a heel problem.

"It’s been going on for the past couple of months, and it’s too painful to carry on.

"He’s going to be out for a period of time. It’s a nasty injury.”

Howe on a "great year" on Tyneside:

"A lot has happened in the year. If you think back to where we were and the strides made by the players, it’s been a great year.

"We hope we continue the momentum we have got."
