Chelsea and Tottenham failed to capitalise on Newcastle United's New Year's Eve stalemate at St James' Park, as both sides slipped up in winnable games on Sunday.

Spurs could've gone one point behind us had they beaten Aston Villa in the 2pm kick off, but second half goals from Emi Buendia and Douglas Luiz handed Unai Emery's side a 2-0 win in North London.

After that, Graham Potter's Chelsea left Nottingham Forest with just a point, as Serge Aurier's equaliser gave the newly-promoted Reds a well deserved draw, leaving the Blues nine points behind Newcastle with a game in hand.

I watched both games and both our 'big six' rivals were poor throughout, reminding us that we have nothing to fear in our hunt for an unlikely top four spot.

After Eddie Howe's Mags missed chances in a 0-0 draw with Leeds and Man Utd (4th) closed the gap with a 1-0 win over Wolves in Saturday's early kick off, it's a welcome boost to see both Spurs and Chelsea start the New Year with surprise slip ups.
