Newcastle shortlist Leeds star, versatile Frenchman and West Ham talent - The Guardian

by Andrew Reynolds ·

As reported by The Guardian, Eddie Howe is targeting a wide forward and right-back in the January transfer window - not just a new central midfielder - with Jack Harrison, Marcus Thuram and Harrison Ashby all on his wishlist.

Harrison was heavily linked with a move to Tyneside over the summer - Howe is clearly a big fan of the 26-year-old and hoping we can finance a move for the attacking midfielder.

It was believed that Leicester’s James Maddison would be our number one target, but The Guardian's Louise Taylor claims a move for the England international may need to ‘wait until the summer’.

The report states that Benfica’s Enzo Fernández has also been mentioned in transfer discussions, but his astronomical price tag makes him an unrealistic option at present, with Chelsea expected to sign the Argentine instead.

Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram - who could be available for around £10m due to an expiring contract - appears to be well within our sights, although it remains to be seen if he'll run down his contract and leave on a free transfer at the end of the season instead.

Ashby has been on our radar since the summer and reportedly wants out West Ham. Real Valladolid’s Ivan Fresneda is another option being explored after Steve Nickson was spotted watching the Spaniard last week. Who knows, perhaps the club are in the market for more than one young right-back?
