TV footage makes mockery of VAR call & Marco Silva’s moaning after Newcastle 1-0 Fulham

by Andrew Reynolds ·

Footage of Kieran Trippier’s ‘challenge’ to concede a penalty against Fulham has shown it was our defender who was actually fouled - making mockery of VAR and Marco Silva's outburst at the referee.

The clip clearly shows Fulham’s Bobby Decordova-Reid actually initiated the contact after he stamped on Trippier’s foot on the edge of the box - yet it was this moment that was scrutinised by VAR and referee Robert Jones which ultimately led to the penalty.

Thankfully, this did not cost us the game as former Toon striker Alexandar Mitrovic kicked his spot kick against his own foot, resulting in a free-kick and an eventual 1-0 win for the Toon thanks to Isak's late winner.

However, this is not the first instance of VAR working against us this season and it could have had a huge impact of the rest of our season had the penalty been converted and we lost the game. Watch the incident below:

Fulham boss Marco Silva picked up a yellow card after the game for his antics on the sidelines and towards the referee, but this just proves it was Howe who should’ve been incensed instead.

"We were very unlucky this afternoon. It's really difficult for me to understand.

“You can miss the penalty but it has to be red card, penalty…and in that moment the game would be very different."

“The decision from the referee and the VAR is hard to understand.

“This group is too strong to be let down.

“The referee can make mistakes. I make mistakes and so do my players for us it is hard to understand how VAR does not see that but we have to go again.”
