£42m flop on Newcastle's radar as Premier League giants consider loan-to-buy offers - Report

According to 90min, Man City could sanction a loan-to-buy deal for Kalvin Phillips this summer as Newcastle join the race to sign the struggling midfielder. 

Just eight months ago, the 27-year-old signed for the Premier League champions for £42m with many suggesting it was an underrated piece of business for Guardiola's squad rotation.

However, the former Leeds man has only made five Premier League appearances and is now keen to go elsewhere in the hunt for more minutes as he hopes to secure a spot in the England squad for Euro 2024. 

Both West Ham and Leeds had shown an interest in signing the defensive midfielder in January and now it appears Newcastle, Leicester and Wolves are also ‘in the mix’. 

It’s understood that Man City will not stand in Phillips’ way should he ask to leave and that they could even let him go on loan with a view to buy as they accept they will not recoup the £42m they initially paid. 

Should he be able to stay fit and get back to his best form, this could be a great signing for Eddie Howe who is in the market for a new number six and has a clear preference for British players.
