Alan Shearer hails Eddie Howe interview & reveals what impressed him most after 5-1 win

by Olly Hawkins ·

After yesterday's game, Eddie Howe told Sky Sports that we actually played below our 'fluent best' for large parts of last night's 5-1 win over West Ham.

On punditry duties for the Premier League, Alan Shearer has been discussing our performance, the result and Howe's interview after the game, believing his post-match comments show the high standards that have now been set at Newcastle.

Shearer agrees that we actually played better in Sunday's 2-0 win over Man Utd, but was so impressed by how clinical we were in the final third and punish every error West Ham made at the back, feeling this is exactly what we were doing during our run of frustrating draws earlier in the year.

He was delighted to see us show that 'ruthless' streak and feels we now look a 'proper football team' who are 'really enjoying their football' after our fourth-straight win.

Speaking to Premier League TV after the game, he said this alongside Ian Wright:

"For Eddie to come out and say that he was slightly dissapointed with the way they played just shows you how high standards are in that football club now.

"And he's right. They went from their best performance of the season in every position to slightly falling below that, but what they lacked six weeks ago, in terms of putting the ball in the back of the net and their finishing - that's exactly what they had tonight.

"It might not have been their best in terms of passing. But in terms of the finishing and being ruthless and punishing West Ham for every error they made, then yeh, they were clinical.

"It's looking good. The city is buzzing at the minute and it's great what the football club is giving the fans - and the fans are giving it back as well.

"You can see it's a happy camp - a good camp - they look like a proper football team and a team and squad that's really enjoying their football. And so they should, because they're in a great, great moment."
