Newcastle set to launch 'official proposal' for tough-tackling midfielder - Report
As we revealed in a January exclusive, Newcastle United have been showing interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
A few months later, reports in Portugal claim we are ready to make a move for the tough-tackling 22-year-old, as popular outlet Record have released a new piece on his future.
They report that we look set to make an 'official proposal' for the Uruguayan this summer, revealing that there's 'growing interest' from St James' Park ahead of the summer transfer window.
Ugarte has a €60m release clause in his current deal - which expires in 2026 - and has been key to Lisbon's successful season in Europe. He starred in their Champions League win over Spurs last year and helped Sporting see off Arsenal in their Europa League last 16 tie with Arsenal; a victory that's set up a quarter-final clash with Juventus this week.
Tottenham have also been linked with the South American. If true and we really are preparing a formal bid for the midfielder, it could make the top-four stakes even greater heading into a huge summer for both clubs.
Another one to watch in our ongoing search for a new No 6. Here's a few clips of Ugarte in action:
