I can't believe what I was reading after Saturday's 3-0 defeat - So many short memories...

First off, let me start by saying social media does not represent all Newcastle fans. However, I saw so many excessive reactions to Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

It was our poorest display of the season and one of those games where the scoreline actually flattered us. We have every right to be dissapointed and expect better - Howe admitted after the game that we weren't good enough in all departments. Criticism is fair and to be expected, but I saw a lack of perspective when I was scrolling through Twitter in the hours following the final whistle.

I saw fans and accounts (who couldn't get enough of our five-game winning streak just last week) saying Burn shouldn't play at left-back again, labelling Gordon as a waste of money just moments after his second start and questioning if a huge overhaul is needed this summer.

After the run we've been on and the incredible consistency we've shown for almost 18 months, I'd be a bit deflated as a player to see mini meltdowns after one heavy defeat. Take Burn, for example, who was slated on Saturday. We all know he has his limitations and that an orthodox left-back will be targeted this summer, but he's also made up 20% of the best defence in England this year.

Then Gordon - it's been a bad week for him and I understand those who worry we've overpaid. However, those writing him off already should know better; just look at how Longstaff, Joelinton and Almiron have improved with time, good coaching and added belief. Gordon is 22 and just getting started at Newcastle.

It's also important to remember that Saturday was the FIRST time all season we've been outplayed. The first time a team outside of Man City or Liverpool have beaten us in the Premier League since Everton won 1-0 at Goodison last March. This was also a superb performance from Aston Villa. Yes, it was mixed in with a rare and surprising poor display from us, but it was also our third game in 10 days and our third straight away game against one of the most in-form sides in the division. With injuries, fatigue and a squad that's still lacking strength in depth, off days like this can happen.

Not so long ago, we were being battered on a weekly basis and praying to survive under Steve Bruce. Now we're in the driving seat to bring Champions League football back to St James' Park. That rapid turnaround in fortunes doesn't mean criticism is no longer allowed, but we can't become a victim of our owns success and expect Newcastle United to win every single week.

We've been spoilt this season in some respects, as bad performances seem to arrive once in a blue moon. So, when they do - as we saw on Saturday - let's not lose our heads and instead add a bit of perspective behind our heat of the moment rants. After all, I fully expect us to be bang at it on Sunday when Spurs come to town.
