Eddie Howe favourite reveals truth behind new deal and altered role at Newcastle United

Matt Ritchie has revealed that the club activated a one-year clause to extend his time on Tyneside by a further season, insisting he'll be "ready" to play his part when called upon.

When the retained list was released last month, many were surprised to see the rarely-seen 33-year-old sign a new deal. However, the former Bournemouth star has spoken out about his altered role under Eddie Howe; who has told Ritchie he stills has a "role to play" next season.

The winger played just 32 minutes of Premier League football over the 2022/23 season and missed out on our matchday squad on several occasions, but Howe has talked up his influence behind the scenes, where he's thought to be a real leader and motivator.

That said, Ritchie has vowed to step in when needed, insisting he is "not giving up" on his playing days just yet. Speaking to BBC Newcastle about his new deal he said:

"I think everyone knows the situation that I found myself in, I was coming to the end of my contract. I had a year option which was then in the club's hands. But the manager and the football club made me feel that I was valued and that I have a role to play and I am excited about that.

"I never expected to stay for eight seasons but I am thoroughly enjoying my time here. It is an amazing place to be at the moment and hopefully I can be part of something special this season. Of course I understand my role has changed.

"We have an unbelievably talented squad that we have now. I am not giving up or taking a backwards step, when called upon I am ready."
