Agent trying to secure deadline day move but Howe keen to keep Toon trio - Report

by Olly Hawkins ·

According to The Chronicle, Matt Targett's agent is trying to find the left-back a late loan move - but Eddie Howe is keen to keep the defender on Tyneside.

Jamaal Lascelles has received interest from Besiktas - as Sky Sports revealed earlier this week - and Javier Manquillo has received interest from Spain.

However, it's believed Howe would prefer to retain all three ahead of tonight's 11pm deadline, feeling our squad looks strong and must stay that way as we prepare to compete on four fronts this season.

As for Targett, it was reported a few days ago that Fulham and Nottingham Forest both had loan bids rejected for the full-back.

Ironically, he left Aston Villa 18 months ago due to a lack of game time, but he's now having the same issue at Newcastle. The 27-year-old has started just twice since September and his first-team prospects have only been reduced following Lewis Hall's arrival from Chelsea.

Howe may be reluctant to let him go, yet he hinted back in April that he won't stand in anyone's way if they're unhappy and keen to leave. It remains to be seen if a suitable offer comes in for Targett, but his situation could be one to watch over the final hours of the window.

As for Lascelles, our inability to sign a right-sided centre-back and Sven Botman's injury will almost certainly block any late exit for our club captain.
