Eddie Howe reveals "ultimate ambition" after journalist shocks Toon boss with surprise stat

Eddie Howe insists it's his "ultimate aim and ambition" to bring a trophy to Newcastle United.

We reached the final of the Carabao Cup earlier this year and kick off this season's campaign with "the ultimate test" against Man City.

Howe insists there's "no priority list" when it comes to the Premier League, the Champions League or domestic cups, saying our next game is always our most important and a 'fierce determination' from his players to win a trophy for the fans.

Speaking in Tuesday's press conference, The Times' Martin Hardy pointed out that it's been 15 years since an English manager won a major trophy. It shocked Howe, who's "giving everything" to end that run and bring silverware back to St James' Park.

Here's what he had to say ahead of Wednesday night's cup game and the 15-year drought for English managers:

"I'd love to end that run. I didn't realise it was that long - 15 years is a long time. I'm giving everything I can to try and bring silverware to this football club. That's my ultimate aim and ambition.

"I'm going to give it everything I've got. There's been some outstanding English managers, so I'm surprised.

"It's an important competition for us and last year was amazing for us. We have the ultimate test coming up this year - a totally different tie to last year (away to Tranmere), but we will give it every importance and try as hard we can to progress. We want to try and compete in every competition - we certainly aren't dismissing it as anything other than our most important game.

"There’s no priority list. There’s no one tournament that is more important than the other. And I have said this to the players, many times, because it is a very dangerous thing to do (talk about one tournament or game being more important).

“The most important game is our next game. Whoever that is, whatever competition that is. And we will try and focus all our energies to try and win that match, whichever tournament that is.

"The group of players here are fiercely determined to give back and win a trophy for the fans. We are well aware of our hunt for a trophy here - it's pushing us all and this is a competition we take very seriously. We'll do everything we can to try and do it"
