Early team news - 3 ruled out, Joelinton surprise and 6 Man City stars set to miss cup clash

Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola have both offered some early team news ahead of tonight's Carabao Cup clash at St James' Park.

Howe has confirmed that Harvey Barnes is facing "months rather than weeks" on the sidelines after he was forced off on Sunday. The game comes too soon Joe Willock (Achilles) and Emil Krafth (ACL), but Joelinton was pictured back in training on Tuesday afternoon.

Howe made no reference to the Brazilian in his press conference and it's unlikely he returns tonight, however, it's a huge boost to see the big man back on the grass after missing our last three.

The boss admitted there's a "couple" of players carrying knocks or fatigued from our recent three-game week, saying he'll have to "utilise the squad" given we face Burnley on Saturday and PSG in the Champions League next Wednesday.

Howe refused to confirm if Lewis Miley will be involved, said "possibly" when asked if we'll see Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall, and is yet to decide if he'll rotate between the sticks, with Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius waiting in the wings.

Guardiola has confirmed Ruben Dias and Kyle Walker will be rested, while Rodri is suspended. Elsewhere, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and John Stones will miss out with injuries.

Here's what Howe had to say when speaking to the press ahead of the game:

"We've got a couple in there (that have knocks) after such a big physical effort. The three-game week does test you - it's something we're going to have to get used to. But we do have a few issues in there.

“I need to assess everybody physically first from Sunday. There’s a couple of players carrying certain injuries.

“We do have players that are really keen to play and show what they can do.

“We will have to utilise the squad, especially with what we have coming up next week.”
