Bad news for PSG ahead of Newcastle trip and ‘big six’ rivals suffer setbacks

It’s been a good weekend for Newcastle United in more ways than one. Not only did we see off Burnley 2-0 to secure our fourth win from our last five games, several results elsewhere went our way.

PSG travelled to bottom of the table Clermont on Saturday afternoon and would’ve been hoping for a confidence boosting win ahead of their Champions League trip to Tyneside on Wednesday. Instead, they struggled to break down the Ligue 1 minnows and left with a 0-0 draw, leaving them 5th in the table after three wins, three draws and one defeat from their opening seven games.

Their inability to find the breakthrough also meant no rest for star man Kylian Mbappe, who played the full 90 alongside the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Randal Kolo Muani, Achraf Hakimi and Marquinhos. Considering Mbappe has only just returned from an ankle injury, he stayed on longer than many expected.

Elsewhere, we also saw several top six rivals lose i over the weekend. Carabao Cup opponents Man Utd 1-0 lost at home to Crystal Palace, Liverpool were done over by VAR in a 2-1 defeat to Spurs and Brighton were battered 6-1 by Aston Villa, leaving us three points behind the Seagulls, four from Liverpool and three ahead of Ten Hag’s Reds.

We’re struggling with injuries and suspension, but we go into Wednesday on the back of five straight clean sheets and in search of a fourth straight win at SJP.
