Shock horror: Southgate snubs NUFC stars & picks Premier League duo instead - Official England squad

by Olly Hawkins ·

Gareth Southgate has named his England squad for the upcoming international break, where Kieran Trippier is the only Newcastle United player selected.

Despite their outstanding displays in recent weeks, there's no place for Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff, Nick Pope or Dan Burn. All five have been overlooked by the England boss, who has gone with Man City bench-warmer Kalvin Phillips and Chelsea's Conor Gallagher once again.

West Ham's Jarrod Bowen and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins have received their first call-ups for over a year after an impressive start to the Premier League season. Watkins scored a hat-trick in Villa's 6-1 win over Brighton last weekend but is level with Wilson on four goals for the season.

Perhaps Wilson was left out due to the hamstring tightness that's kept him out of our last three games. However, it feels all too predictable that Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff have been left out, despite dominating the likes of Man City and PSG over the past week and outperforming so many that continue to remain in Southgate's good books.

As for Nick Pope, he's kept clean sheets in five of his last six games. Yes, his kicking needs work, but it's a headscratcher that he's missed out for the second time running. On a positive note, we need all five to stay fit, so that's one less worry heading into next week's break.

The Three Lions will face Australia in a friendly on Friday 13th October, before taking on Sandro Tonali’s Italy in a EURO 2024 qualifier on October 17th. See the official squad in full below:
