Yankuba Minteh criticised by Feyenoord boss Arne Slot & Dutch media after game on Sunday

Yankuba Minteh has enjoyed a superb start at Feyenoord following a loan move from Newcastle, but has come under criticism following their 2-0 win over PEC Zwolle on Sunday.

After three goals and an assist in his last four league appearances, the 19-year-old started once again over the weekend. However, he was criticised by fans and the media for his selfishness in the final third, with former PSV star Ibrahim Afellay describing him as a "rough diamond with a lot to learn" on Dutch TV.

Feyenoord boss Arne Slot addressed this after the game, questioning if Minteh was unaware of the options around him or determined to ignore his teammates and score himself.

The 45-year-old has praised the threat he carried, his pace and work rate, but is keen to know why the winger often chose to go alone and shoot, rather than pass to a teammate in a better position. Here's what Slot told ESPN after the game;

"I don't know whether it is a lack of overview today, or whether it was an urge to want to score a goal himself.

"As far as I'm concerned, that's not the same, because if you have an overview and you see someone standing free and think 'well, today I'm going for my own chance', that's different from not seeing someone. Because in general I think he has the overview.

''But today he often went for his own chance, but it is true that he is always involved in threats, because he is of course so fast. But today he definitely didn't get the maximum return out of it. He is still young and works very hard. He is also always willing to defend back. But I will look back carefully to see whether the overview was lacking or whether he thought I wanted to score a goal against this opponent."

He's enjoyed a superb start to the season, scoring goals, getting plenty of game time, making two Champions League appearances and marking his Gambia debut with a crucial goal, but it's natural that a player of his age and inexperience is going to make mistakes.

Hopefully he learns from this and keeps his place in Feyenoord's side over the weeks and months ahead. With bags of pace, energy and an eye for goal, we could have a huge talent on our hands if he learns from Sunday's mistakes.
