2 changes - Is this the Newcastle side set to start vs Borussia Dortmund tonight?
Three weeks on from that memorable 4-1 win over PSG, Champions League football is back at St James' Park as we take on Borussia Dortmund tonight.
Here's the side we're expecting Eddie Howe to go with for the 8pm kick off in group F:
(4-3-3): Pope – Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Burn – Longstaff, Bruno, Joelinton – Almiron, Isak, Gordon.
OUT: Murphy and Wilson. IN: Almiron and Isak.
For me, there’s only two questions going into this game when it comes to the side Eddie Howe selects. Joelinton or Tonali in that third midfield spot and Murphy or Almiron on the right?
The first question is will Joelinton will be OK to start two games in five days after recently returning from a hamstring injury? As for Tonali, it looks like he'll be available to play unless his worldwide ban is announced in the next few hours (which seems unlikely at this late stage). Either way, I think we’ll go with Joelinton’s physicality; something we missed in our opening group game away to AC Milan. That being said, Howe has every right to play safe with Joelinton after his recent injury and go with Tonali before his ban; especially when he was part of that midfield that blew PSG away three weeks ago.
In attack, I can see Almiron getting the nod after a rare rest on Saturday. There’ll be a temptation to go with Murphy after his goal and two assists against Palace, but Almiron was electric in our 4-1 win over PSG and has been back amongst the goals in recent weeks.
Up top, Isak is fully fit and will be raring to go. Wilson played the majority of Saturday’s game, so it makes sense for the Swede to lead the line in this one.
Predicted Borussia Dortmund XI: Kobel – Sule, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Bensebaini – Can, Nmecha – Malen, Reus, Brandt – Fullkrug.
