Newcastle release Eddie Howe press conference on injuries, Man Utd, UEFA laws & Miley

Newcastle United have released footage of Eddie Howe's full Friday morning press conference ahead of tomorrow's 8pm kick-off at home to Man Utd.

The boss reveals how we're looking after Tuesday's trip to Paris, discusses the VAR error, looks ahead to Man Utd, the busy month ahead and issues an injury update on Botman, Willock, Longstaff and Barnes.

He heaps praise on Lewis Miley, Nick Pope and Tino Livramento, shares what he got up to on his 46th birthday this week and warns the team not to underestimate Erik ten Hag's side after three-straight without conceding in the league.

Howe on our reaction to PSG heartbreak and the busy month ahead:

"Physically fine. Mentally I think there was a bit of reflection and a lot of disappointment. Collectively we felt minutes away from a historic result.

"What happened, happened. A new day comes and you look at it slightly differently. It can't linger with us. Even for a couple of days because that hinders our future.

"We want to get through the month and do well. We've still got a really good team on the pitch and a very good team. We have youth and experience, We're good enough to get some positive results."

Howe on injuries:

“We hope both Sean and Joe aren’t long-term injuries. The problem is even two or three weeks at this stage feels like a lifetime with the games we have. Very difficult to give a definitive time on both but they’re not too bad.”

 “He (Botman) is not training with us at the moment, he’s building up very slowly to build his load to make sure we don’t hit the knee injury too much. At the moment, he is reacting well and we hope to have him back soon. We would love to get him back, he is a big player for us.”

“He (Barnes) hasn’t trained with us yet.”

Howe on the handball law:

"The handball law is vague. It's not clear. That's probably been the biggest problem. I'd struggle to tell what is and isn't handball. Looking at the decision again, the referee made the right decision. He's been told by VAR that they think it is a penalty.

"How is he going to the monitor to review it? Naturally, does he have to give the penalty because he's been sent to the monitor? I'm old fashioned - the on-pitch decision should be given more respect. We'll ask for clarity but the moment has gone."

Howe on Man Utd:

“You can never underestimate the qualities of Manchester United, they have a very good Head Coach who is leading them, we have total respect to our opposition. They are performing well; they have quality players.

We need to keep that momentum and energy from our recent performances. I think it will be a very good game.”

Howe on Lewis Miley:

"The future will be the judge for Lewis but he's had an early taste of high level football which can only be good for him. He's able to take everything in his stride.

"For someone so young, he's got a good perspective on sport and life. He's very calm. Very polite, very respectful. But he's keen to show his qualities.

Howe on Nick Pope:

“Some of the saves he made in Paris are some of the best I have seen live. In a part of our season where we need everyone to step up and give more, Nick has certainly done that.

“He is contributing massively for us; he has been a huge player. His character is undeniably so good for us, he is very good for the group.”
