Good news - Howe confirms "big player" is close to comeback after return to training

by Olly Hawkins ·

Eddie Howe has revealed that Jacob Murphy is "close" to returning from injury after resuming light training over the past week.

It's been a brutal day of injury updates in the main - Joelinton has been ruled out for six weeks, while Joe Willock, Elliot Anerson and Harvey Barnes remain some way off - but it's great to hear some positive news on Murphy.

The winger was coming into form prior to his shoulder injury, where he suffered a dislocation in our 1-0 win over Arsenal back in early November. Howe describes him as a "big player" and has hailed his attitude and presence in training. It's also worth noting he's been involved in five goals (one goal and four assists) in nine appearances so far this season.

Asked for an update on the 28-year-old this morning, Howe had this to say:

“He's close. He has joined in training with us, although only on a non-contact basis.

"He’s been in and around the team though, which has been great.

"His personality is really good, so he’s been a big player to have back with us training."

Miguel Almiron looked much improved at Sunderland following a recent dip in form, but that struggle was possible due to the number of games he had to play. Hopefully soon, Murphy can give us another option down the right, giving Miggy a break when needed and pushing him to perform.
