Dan Ashworth and Eddie Howe's response to Man Utd rumours - Old quotes offer hope?

Last night, rumours linking Dan Ashworth with a move to Manchester United ramped up once again, with The Athletic's David Ornstein revealing that the Red Devils have identified the 52-year-old as their top target.

It's clear INEOS are determined to bring the former Brighton chief to Old Trafford, but Ashworth's stance remains a mystery. Some say he's focused on his role on Tyneside and committed to the club, while others report that he's 'open' to a new challenge at Old Trafford.

We could do with some clarity from the man himself. But, looking back at previous interviews, Ashworth said this to the local press when asked about exit rumours back in November:

“I’m really happy, it’s a brilliant city, club and project. I’m thoroughly engaged in throwing myself into all of those things and really enjoying the challenge. I’ve got NO release clause in my Newcastle contract.

“I’m really pleased with the direction this club is heading. We’re on an upward trajectory but there are definitely some bumps in the road. We’re on the right pathway. Of course, we want to be in the Champions League as much as we can but it’s incredibly difficult."
Eddie Howe was also quizzed on Man Utd's lingering interest in Ashworth in December, saying he had "no doubt" that our sporting director was "here for the long term", revealing how important he is to the club behind the scenes:

“Of course I’ve spoken to Dan, but not necessarily about that. It’s very difficult to comment on speculation, whether that be a player or someone in Dan’s position. I’ve got no doubt that Dan is here for the long term, but it’s probably a question for Dan rather than me.”

“I think whenever someone is in the important role that Dan is, hugely important and he’s done a really good job in helping us in loads of different ways [since being appointed].

“He’s connected with everything that goes on in terms of the decision-making at the club. He’s hugely important and has been a really calming influence behind the scenes, his vast experience has really helped.”

Old comments and the situation may have changed over the past few months, but let's hope Ashworth remains committed to the club despite constant links with Man Utd.
