'Everybody needs to relax' - Newcastle rumours and Sunday's looming deadline

The PSR deadline is quickly approaching and Newcastle United have yet to make the sale they need to be compliant. The last week has led to a lot of rumours on social media, both incomings and outgoings. To be put simply, the majority of these rumours have been met with bemusement and scorn by supporters.

Everybody needs to relax. It is only June and as yet, the club have made one first team signing. Although it is clear that the club has a domestic preference under Eddie Howe, we have shopped abroad for some of our best players and that is a trend that is likely to continue.

Supporters who try to approach any transfer rumour with an open mind and understand the logic are labelled 'happy clappers'. For years, the club was impossible to support and there was no excitement. Those comparing rumours about Dominic Calvert-Lewin to the Mike Ashley era are being hyperbolic. Ashley wouldn't even approve a £1m loan deal for Hamza Choudhury during a relegation battle.

Regardless of your views on the types of players we target, it is obvious that the club is process driven with the aim of growing every season. They have gone from relegation candidates, to mid table and we are now established in the top eight. Successive finishes in that area of the division underline how the club is growing.

There needs to be patience this summer. The whole picture hasn't become apparent. If we signed Dominic Calvert Lewin, it may appear to be underwhelming, but if it led to bigger investment in other positions, it would be viewed differently.

After the PSR deadline passes, our transfer plans will become clearer. A recent link to Malick Thiaw is encouraging and suggests the big investments will be made from foreign leagues, which has been a common theme under the current regime. Sven Botman, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak are all examples of this. The domestic players are targeted to raise the floor of the squad, while foreign players are wanted to raise the ceiling.

Every club should be judged when the window closes at the very minimum, but even then, it could be too soon. Last summer's transfer business was criticised for the majority of last season. However, we may end up starting the 2024/25 season with three of our four summer signings in our starting eleven. If Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall all keep developing, we may look back on the summer of 2023 with a lot of fondness.

The next few days are huge for the club, as several media reports suggest we are at risk of breaking PSR. Hopefully, the club have something up their sleeves to prevent that. Then, we can look forward to the bigger transfers being made in July and August ahead of the new season.

Regardless of your own views on the transfer strategy, it is obvious there remains a high level of ambition at the club. We are still in a period of growth and there should be plenty of excitement ahead of the new season. When the window closes, I am sure we will be in a better place to the one we started it in.
