Barnes and Isak score in pre-season win - 22 players involved, photos and match report
Newcastle United have kicked off their pre-season with a behind-closed-doors win over SpVgg Unterhaching today to round off our training camp at the Adidas HQ.
Eddie Howe used 22 players in total, naming different XIs in each half and saw his side race into a 3-0 lead thanks to first half goals from Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy (set up by Barnes) and Alexander Isak.
There were several changes at the break, seeing Odysseas Vlachodimos play alongside youngsters like Leo Shahar, Trevan Sanusi, Alfie Harrison and Garang Kuol in a half that saw the Germans pull a goal back from the spot.
See the line-ups, photos and official match report below, describing all three of our goals in the 3-1 win:
First half XI: Nick Pope, Jamal Lewis, Emil Krafth, Dan Burn (c), Lewis Hall, Jacob Murphy, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, Joe White, Harvey Barnes, Alexander Isak
Second half XI: Odysseas Vlachodimos, Jamie Miley, Cathal Heffernan, Ellis Stanton, Leo Shahar, Johnny Emmerson, Jay Turner-Cooke, Alfie Harrison, Trevan Sanusi, Garang Kuol, Ben Parkinson (c)
'Barnes fired United ahead after five minutes when he cut inside and fired home with a trademark finish. The second goal arrived in the 24th minute after a superb move, which resulted in Sean Longstaff finding Barnes, who cut the ball back to Jacob Murphy to sweep past the goalkeeper.
More slick approach involving Murphy and Barnes saw Isak cannon a shot against the crossbar, but he was on the scoresheet on the stroke of half time. Last season's 25-goal top scorer raced in on goal and finished smartly in the 43rd minute.
A much younger side played in the second period - Ben Parkinson's substitute appearance at Bournemouth last term was so far the only senior match for Newcastle United between them, although 42-cap Greece international Odysseas Vlachodimos replaced Nick Pope in goal.
Parkinson and Garang Kuol both had opportunities to add to the scoreline before Simon Skarlatidis pulled one back from the spot for the German side, but it was a strong start to United's pre-season preparations.'
Tino Livramento, Lloyd Kelly and Joe Willock missed out as they are managing their fitness, while Sandro Tonali wasn't able to play as the fixture had to be registered with both clubs’ respective FAs. It's unclear if he'll be able to feature in a behind-closed-doors clash with Burnley next week. Callum Wilson (back) didn't feature, while Pope and Vlachodimos were preferred to Ruddy and Gillespie.
