Sky Sports: Newcastle eyeing three signings - £60m hope and big spending on horizon?
Sky Sports' Keith Downie has issued an update on the Toon transfer front, discussing our pursuit of Marc Guehi, Malick Thiaw, William Osula and a quality right winger.
The North East reporter reveals that we have approached Crystal Palace over Guehi, believing the Eagles 'may decide to cash in' for a fee in the region of £60m now he's entered the final two years of his contract.
A £10m deal for William Osula appears to be imminent, offering cover for Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson up top, with the Sheffield United striker expected at St James' Park in the 'coming days.'
Talks have also taken place over AC Milan's Malick Thiaw, so it'll be interesting to see if our move for Guehi prompts Milan to reduce their demands. However, if the England international is now the top target in our search for a 'top class' right-footed centre-back, Downie warns that we'll face 'stiff competition' from a number of clubs.
As hoped, the Sky Sports reporter also believes that a big chunk of our summer budget will be spent on a quality right winger. No names are mentioned, but Downie hints that there will be money to spend; albeit less than £100m.
Speaking on Osula, our search for a right-sided centre-back and quality right winger, Downie said: “He (Osula) is a player we expect to arrive at St James’ Park in the coming days. Is he one for the first-team? I certainly think he will train with the first-team and be involved in first-team squads, perhaps on the bench to start with.
"Once he is over the line, he will be another option for Eddie Howe. So £10m plus £5m add-ons, I do expect that one to be pushed through fairly quickly.
“I think Newcastle United will get their chequebook out (for more signings). Things have been slow for them, part of the problem has been big changes behind the scenes at the club. Amanda Staveley leaving, whilst Paul Mitchell has been brought in as the new Sporting Director. It has been a difficult few weeks for them but I do expect them to add more players (as well as Osula) before the end of the transfer window.
“I don’t think they will spend hundreds of millions but… I do believe they will bring in a top-class centre-half, they have been holding talks with AC Milan for German international Malick Thiaw. Then the key area they want to add in this summer is in the right forward area.
” I reported a couple of weeks ago that they were in talks with a Saudi Pro League club to sell Miguel Almiron, I think that still is the case and Almiron could go. I expect Newcastle United to put the crux of their summer budget into that right attacking area and spend a fair chunk of money.
“I just don’t think they will get those signings in, in time to make their debuts against Southampton in two weeks time but I do expect them to be active. I get asked all the time how much Newcastle United have to spend this summer, I think it is more than £50m but not as much as £100m. I think those signings will be made and augment the arrival of Will Osula.”
