Alan Shearer on Marc Guehi rumours and Newcastle's top priority for 2024/25

Toon legend Alan Shearer has been speaking about Newcastle’s summer, their biggest priority this season and his take on the Marc Guehi transfer saga that is yet to be resolved.

Shearer admitted it's been a ‘tough summer' with Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi leaving as well as rumours of England wanting Eddie Howe. But, despite that, he remains hopeful of Newcastle’s chances for 2024/25 should we avoid any big injuries this season and has tipped us to just about finish fourth.

On the Guehi rumours, Shearer feels it would be a ‘real statement’ to sign one of England’s best players at the Euros and remains hopeful we can complete a sighing or two to settle things down.

Finally, the 54-year-old told Betfair that Newcastle must make it a priority to win a trophy this season rather than finish in the top four, adding that he would take silverware over European football ‘all day’. Here's his quotes in full:

Shearer on Marc Guehi - "Hopefully things will settle down and we're able to make another signing or two. It'll be a real statement if Newcastle spend £55million to £60million on a central defender. Guehi was one of England's best players at the Euros so if they can get him then it'd be a real statement signing.”

Shearer on a tough summer - “It's been a tough summer for Newcastle, with Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi leaving and with the speculation around Eddie Howe and England. I think Liverpool will finish in the top four again.

“I'd be hopeful of Newcastle because they haven't got European football to contend with this year so in terms of injuries and squad availability, that should help them. If they can get a free run, then I'd be hopeful that Newcastle could finish fourth.”
