According to The Telegraph, Newcastle will give up on their pursuit of Marc Guehi if they do not agree a deal with Crystal Palace before the weekend.
Luke Edwards reports that our £65m offer remains on the table, but decision time is close and the club are looking at alternatives should a move for their first-choice target collapse.
It seems the club are refusing to go beyond £65m after offering £60m plus £5m in add-ons last week. However, reports suggest the Eagles are demanding £70m for their captain; who they may be even more reluctant to lose now centre-back partner Joachim Andersen is heading to Fulham for £30m.
Edwards also reveals that Liverpool's Joe Gomez has been discussed, with the club's recruitment team having a list of alternatives should Guehi stat at Selhurst Park.
Gomez, 27, could leave Liverpool this summer after missing out on Arne Slot's squad for last Saturday's 2-0 win at Ipswich. The England international can also play at right-back or left-back, offering plenty of versatility, but he's three years older than Guehi and has had his fair share of injury issues.
The Telegraph state that a cheaper alternative to Guehi could also open the door to the signing of a centre-back and a right-winger, but time is ticking with the summer window set to shut next Friday night.
Other centre-backs who've been linked include Bayer Leverkusen duo Edmond Tapsoba and Odilon Kossounou, along with Chelsea's Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah and AC Milan's Malick Thiaw.
