Liverpool 'on the verge' of €35m deal to sign former Newcastle target - Fabrizio Romano
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are 'on the verge' of signing former Newcastle target Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia after his impressive Euro 2024 campaign.
Newcastle had been looking to sign a new stopper to compete with Nick Pope earlier in the window with the Georgian international tipped to be one of our marquee signings back in June.
However, after missing out on Tosin Adarabioyo at centre back who was available on a free transfer, our priorities changed and it seems we were forced into a transfer re-think.
Reporting on X this morning, Romano reveals that Mamardashvili will cost around €35m but will return to the Spanish club on loan for this season before joining Liverpool in the summer of 2025, suggesting he could be a long-term replacement for Alisson Becker.
It could prove to be a missed opportunity for Newcastle, but it's fair to say we have bigger priorities to address with first-team improvements needed at centre-back and on the right wing.
