"Newcastle are interested" - £50m target responds to Toon links after summer bid
After spending time with Alexander Isak over the international break, Anthony Elanga has been discussing his future following a deadline day bid from "big club" Newcastle United.
The Nottingham Forest winger was initially linked with a move to St James' Park in June and once again in the final days of August, with Sky Sports reporting that we'd launched a £50m bid for the 22-year-old.
Forest stood their ground and refused to sell, but the player himself has been asked about our interest and his relationship with Isak; who has spoken to Elanga about our interest over the past week.
Speaking to Fotboll Skanalen about his future, he said: “Isak talked to me about it. But I said the same to him as I say to you. We have a good relationship and good chemistry when we play together. But I have a contract with Nottingham.”
“The environment in Nottingham is good. It is clear that you can see that Newcastle are interested, it means that I am playing good football when a big club shows interest.
"But Nottingham is also a big club, they have won two Champions Leagues, even though it was before I was born. But I’m happy in Nottingham and have a contract there. I’m focusing on Nottingham and hope to have a good season, then we’ll see what happens.”
He appears to be flattered by our interest, calls us a 'big club' and talks up his relationship with Isak on and off the pitch, but is also respectful of his contract at Nottingham Forest.
One to watch in January, perhaps? It wouldn't be a big surprise if we reignited our interest after approaches in June and a failed bid in August, but some wonder if we should be aiming higher in our search for a quality right-winger.
