Newcastle reignite interest in €30m Borussia Dortmund star - Report

You'd think the arrival of another midfielder is well down Newcastle's priority list given our need to strengthen down the right-wing and at centre-back, but a familiar name has been linked via the German media this week.

Last summer, before we sealed a £55m deal for Sandro Tonali, The Telegraph's Luke Edwards revealed that we were showing serious interest in a £15 move for Felix Nmecha, who was at Wolfsburg at the time.

Since making a €30m move to Borussia Dortmund last July, the 6ft 2' midfielder has gone on to attract interest from a number of Premier League clubs, which brings us nicely to the latest reports coming out of Germany.

Newcastle back in for Nmecha?

According to German outlet BILD, Newcastle United are back in the running for Nmecha, stating that Man Utd and Chelsea have also been alerted by his 'sensational development' following last summer's €30m move from Wolfsburg.

The report also goes on to say that scouts from Newcastle, Man Utd and Chelsea were all in the stands to watch Nmecha in Dortmund's 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich over the weekend.

The 24-year-old has already introduced himself to the St James' Park crowd when he scored the winner in Dortmund's 1-0 win against us in the Champions League last season, and our recruitment team was clearly impressed.

It's believed Dortmund will demand big money to consider his sale in 2025, suggesting Newcastle would have to pay at least triple the £15m fee t hat was mooted last summer when the midfielder was first linked with a move to St James' Park.

Nmecha, who also has three caps for the German national team, spent 14 years at Manchester City before making the move to the Bundesliga where he's shone in the last few seasons.

Do we need another midfielder?

Personally, it's difficult to see Newcastle going after another central midfielder in the immediate future, so Nmecha may just be one name to keep an eye on for next summer.

Sean Longstaff's long-term future is in doubt - he could be sold for pure profit - and it remains to be seen if Man City will reignite their interest in Bruno Guimaraes after fresh links today.

However, it would be a big surprise if we moved for another midfielder before addressing issues at centre-back, down the right-wing and up front first.
