This shocked me about Jacob Murphy - A Newcastle stat I wasn’t expecting!
Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy ranking in one impressive stat sees him alongside some of the club’s all-time greats.
Murphy signed for his boyhood club in the summer 2017 from Norwich City, with his purple patch in recent weeks of three goals and three assists in three Premier League appearances one of his best spells in black-and-white at a pivotal point in the season.
The 29-year-olds impressive output of late has seen him overtake another boyhood mag in a key all-time metric - with a legend from the early Prem years in his sight.
Jacob Murphy surprise
Murphy has bagged an impressive 21 Premier League assists for Newcastle United to date, placing him seventh in the all time list of creators for the Magpies.
He's still a way behind Nobby Solano, who tops the assists chart in the Premier League era with 54, with Alan Shearer (36), Rob Lee (31), Laurent Robert (29), Kieran Dyer (26) and Peter Beardsley (also 26) coming next - but his quick-footed assist against Ipswich took him past the 20 of Shola Ameobi.
Alexander Isak’s finish on Saturday was the third time this season the Swede has been assisted by Murphy, who has also set-up Harvey Barnes twice to bring his tally for this campaign to five.
Impressive numbers this season
The five assists to his name to this season, added to by three goals, have been absolutely crucial in helping Newcastle turn our form around and build some much-needed momentum during the festive period.
Consistency is something that has often eluded Murphy during his stint on Tyneside, not that anyone would expect him to maintain his ridiculous output recently by any means, but is certainly a factor to consider as we look to build further.
By all accounts Murphy is an affable and well-liked member of the dressing room and he is absolutely someone I want in and around the squad, but it’s no surprise Newcastle have been linked with a move for more high profile winger whose output is more regular than it is rare.
Hope Murphy’s creative qualities are back again today following that superb solo run to set up Isak at Ipswich!
