Two 9/10s, five 8s and a few 7s - Player ratings from Newcastle's 2-0 win at Man Utd
A huge win for Newcastle United and just our second at Old Trafford in Premier League history, as Alexander Isak and Joelinton helped us to a 2-0 win at Man Utd.
Here come our ratings out of 10 and comments on every Mag involved in our Monday night victory in Manchester:
Dubravka (7.5) - Has forgotten how to concede! Did everything he needed to do well and showed his calmness in possession when pressured. That's four Premier League clean sheets on the spin for the Slovakian.
Trippier (7.5) - Tidy in possession, as we have come to expect, read the play well and showed a calm head in a dominant first half. Consecutive games where he’s come off with a muscle issue is a concern.
Schar (7) - Sloppy giveaway nearly allowed Man Utd in before the break and picked up a silly yellow which rules him out of the Spurs game. Did well in the physical duels with Hojlund.
Burn (8) - His customary rock solid performance. Looks much more confident on the ball with Hall outside him as the outlet. Win everything in the air and bullied their front line.
Hall (9) - Great assist for Isak, barely gave Diallo an inch and threw his body in front of everything all game, making a few vital second half blocks. Has come on in leaps and bounds this season and isn’t far off being the first name on the team sheet.
Guimaraes* (9) - Man of the match. “There’s only one Bruno” was being sung from the away end and with good reason. Was involved in everything and dominated the midfield. Set the tone early on to help us dominate, should've grabbed another assist (set up Isak's one-vs-one) and was so classy in the second half to help us settle things down and see out the game. Looks right at home in the more advanced position.
Tonali (8) - Another top notch performance and would be disappointed to have hit the post in the first half. Combination with Bruno and Joelinton is clicking and are looking formidable. Metronome in midfield.
Joelinton (8) - Scored in back to back games and was a colossus in midfield. Can’t think of too many more physical midfielders that we’ve had in the Premier League. Approaching his best form.
Murphy (7) - Quiet in an attacking sense but got through a mountain of work off the ball. Showed his value to the team defensively.
Gordon (8,5) - Assist for the second goal and was a nuisance at both ends all night. Noticeably more mature in his decision making. In a rich vein of form and worked so hard defensively.
Isak (8.5) - Scored for the sixth consecutive game and continues to prove he’s the best all round striker in the premier league. Second half was a bit quieter and was caught offside a few times. Add a few more million to the asking price!
Subs:
Livramento (7) - Polar opposite to Trippier but equally as effective. Some great dribbling and is rarely beaten defensively.
Barnes (NR) - On for the final few minutes.
Willock (NR) - See above!
