Newcastle make move to sign Mooney - Report

The January transfer window is open and Newcastle United are hoping to be active after a lack of incomings in 2024.

It's well documented that the arrival of a new right-winger is a priority and centre-backs remain one to watch, but it seems that overseas gems and young prospects will be high on Paul Mitchell's agenda as we look to work within PSR constraints.

With that in mind, it's intriguing to see January kick off with links to a teenage striker impressing north of the border. Here's the latest.

Newcastle make Mooney move

According to The Sun, Newcastle United have approached St Mirren over the signing of young forward Evan Mooney.

Chief Football Writer Robert Grieve reports that Newcastle and Arsenal both made official approaches for the 17-year-old last night, signalling their interest in landing the teenager.

It's believed neither club have launched a bid as of yet, but a formal approach has left the Scottish Premiership side braced for 'serious bids' as a number of top clubs track the striker who can also operate down the right.

Mooney has bagged a goal and an assist in just 61 minutes of league action for St Mirren this season, scoring in their 3-2 win over St Johnstone and coming off the bench to set up a stoppage time winner against Rangers on Boxing Day.

Mitchell pushing for more future stars?

It's clear that the club are not only focused on first-team signings but also young stars who can future-proof our squad - or be sold for a quick profit to help with PSR.

Georgian talent Vakhtang Salia has already agreed to sign and will arrive from Dinamo Tiblisi over the summer before heading out on loan, with Serbian defender Miodrag Pivas another one to watch following his spell in the Netherlands.

Mooney is being tipped for big things and may well be the latest teenager we are looking to attract, although it seems we'll face stiff competition if Arsenal are also in the mix.
